Note on file sizes: at 300 pixels/inch, arcpress converted an ARC/INFO
.gra file into a tif file of 22,534,920 bytes. The only option for color
tiffs was uncompressed 24-bit color. The image was imported into gimp,
and exported with packed bits at 3,727,202 bytes. GIMP then converted
from 24-bit color to indexed color; there are only 17 colors. The
resulting files were 7,522,916 bytes unpacked, and 449,130 bytes packed.
With proprietary LZW compression, the size was 395,902 bytes.
A gif file was smallest at 202,960 bytes.
A jpeg file (at .75 quality) was 732,465 bytes, and was visibly lossy.
