gzip

gzip/gunzip is a gnu unix program which behaved in a similar manner to the unix compress command. Files have a .gz extension, and are different from .Z or .zip files.
Solaris 2.x version of gunzip

self-exploding DOS version of gzip
This file is 119146 bytes. If it arrives at your machine with a different byte-count, it is being tranferred in ASCII mode rather than binary mode, and is garbage. Check the byte count on the first data file too.

Note to winzip users:
Some people complain about winzip. It's a feature, not a bug. From the 'options' menu, select 'configuration'. Then, the box called "TAR File Smart CR/LF Conversion" needs to be unchecked and everything will work fine.
